Introduction to the Pentatonic Scale

Posted by admin as Featured, Licks, Riffs and Chords

The first guitar scale you should learn is the Pentatonic scale, and you happen to be in luck, because it is both EASY and VERY USEFUL. The pentatonic scale works well over progressions, primarily because it has only 5 notes (there is less chance of landing on a bad one!)

To start, we will concentrate on the minor pentatonic, since this is the form used most widely in popular music. We will be playing the A minor pentatonic scale, starting at the fifth fret on the low E string. You can see this scale shape here (root notes are hollow):

Get used to playing this scale ascending and descending:

Use your index and pinky finger for the 5-8 sequences, and your index and ring fingers for the 5-7 stretches. Keep an even tempo as you play up and down (if possible, use a metronome).

In the next installment, I’ll show you a cool sequenced run that is not only a great warmup, but one that has been used countless times in rock guitar solos!

Until then, keep practicing!
